This week I'm lovin'

Run-of-the-(tread)mill gyms aren't for me. Exercise has always played a huge, fundamental part of my life, it's just I've never seen gym membership as a prerequisite to staying active. This isn't to say there's anything inherently wrong with them at all - I appreciate they totally are for some people - but up to now I've personally associated fitness centres with repetitious rows of uninspiring, colourless machines and testosterone-fuelled grunting in the weights area. All of which kinda detracts from the pure, unmitigated glee and sense of wellbeing I otherwise equate physical activity with. It is - or at least should be - fun!

Saying that, I'm always open to trying out fresh fitness hangouts, all the more so when they profess a new approach to habitual gym monotony. Enter 1Rebel: the self-proclaimed "new face of fitness". Far from the soul-destroying, intimidating set-up of many a fitness counterpart, their no-contract workout "boutiques" are inspiring, friendly and certainly induce those all important positive endorphins. And that's before you start on the health haunt's faultless interior (those changing rooms!) and on-site Roots & Bulbs cold-pressed juice bar. Needless to say, this week's hip-hop/R&B themed "Ride 'n' Grind" group spin session left me in the highest spirits possible. Turns out, not all gyms are created equal.

This week I'm lovin'

Maybs not the brightest of ideas post Sunday's gruelling 10k cross country (followed by a day of heavy suitcase liftin' yesterday), but I'm totally intent on making my transient LDN return as productive as possible! So - this morning I thought I'd start as I mean to go on and bop to East Dulwich's lovely Push Studios to give Piloxing a whirl.

As the name hints, this relatively newfangled workout trend is an offbeat intermingle of pilates and boxing, backed by uptempo beats to keep ya motivated. Today's class consisted of 45 minutes boxing/dance-inspired cardio, rounded off with a 15 minute mat-work segment. You're even equipped with novel weighted gloves which, though seemingly not that weighty to begin with, for sure present an extra challenge on the arms and shoulders as reps increase. The diverse session strikes a super satisfying balance between testing, energising and fun. I'll be back.

Morning runs along Madrid's illustrious museum boulevard, Paseo del Prado. Not the shabbiest of routes.

RUN FORREST RUN

Oh hey guys it's me Brogues Gump

This weekend, something quite miraculous occurred. I, as no more than a complete amateur on the running circuit (pardon the pun), somehow managed to get myself on the podium at my first Spanish running competition, as the second lady past the finish line out of a good few hundred. To say I surprised myself would be a pretty sizeable understatement.

Don't get me wrong, I can certainly be a super determined and driven young lady when I want and need to be. However, for me, running acts as a counterbalance to my perfectionist proclivity; it's a purely pleasure-driven pastime, a time of escapism in which I can get lost in a sweet playlist and plod along at my own little pace.

But, right before Saturday's 10K, my host mamá (who I might add has never seen me run, not once) said to me: "sabes, tienes posibilidades de ganar un trofeo" ["ya know, you have a possibility of winning a trophy"], to which I chuckled and replied something along the lines of "no waaay, Jose!"; I hadn't won a trophy since my childhood football days at Dulwich Hamlet and Southwark Caribb FCs (ahh).

For some reason, though, her words sorta stuck. So when the starting pistol fired, I just went for it, practically sprinting the first 25 minutes. There were of course a bunch of steep inclines when my legs were like "NAHHHHH". But then that little internal voice kicked in: JUST. RUN. So I did. And I placed for the first time ever. Haaaallelujah. What the mind believes, eh...

Ta-daaa.
